Van Eney '09 Fellows Project 2023-24
The Neuro Kit |
the PLAN
Through the Severn School Van Eney '09 Fellows Program, I am creating The Neuro Kit. This will be a neurological exam kit which includes simple tools that are used in a neurological exam. Some of the tool include a flashlight, which can be used for an optic and trochlear test, and a tuning fork, which can be used for the auditory test. I will create a box that includes step-by-step instructions on how to perform the exam and what the results of the exam mean. The purpose of this decision making tool is to provide a good samaritan with tools to discover the information to share with medical professionals once they arrive at the scene. Then, an educated decision can be made towards the person's next step needed in medical care. The goal of my project is to raise awareness towards the medical care needed for critical head injuries by creating a tool that allows for people to perform a quick and easy neurological exam in an emergency situation. The ultimate goal of my project is to normalize having a neurological exam kit in common spaces, just like a first aid kit or an automated external defibrillator (AED), because it could save a life.
ABOUT ME
|
My name is Julia Housek and I am a senior at Severn School in Severna Park, MD. I am the president of the Introduction to Medical Studies Club and I enjoy taking biology, which both align with my interest in pursuing a career in medicine. Through the Van Eney '09 Fellows Program, I am exploring my passion for neurological medicine and science by creating a tool that encourages others to help people in need of medical attention: thus, I came up with the idea for a decision making tool. I wanted to create a project that can potentially save lives, and I hope that The Neuro Kit can be just that!
